Not so for the skill-based game; however, where a character may, presumably, learn blacksmithing mid-adventuring career."<br /><br />Depends which skill-based game you are talking about. The classic skill-based game for me is the BRP family, where learning or improving non-trivial skills like lores and crafts (which have 00-10% base rating usually) isn't easy. To improve by experience you have to succeed at a test, which has a low chance. Your other option is training, which requires long months and lots of money until your skill reaches a tolerable level. Then you reach the point where you are a master, and can only improve by experience - but while you have a great chance to succeed, your chance to improve is pretty small.
